KENNESAW, Ga. -

A local plastic surgeon faces a lawsuit that claims a surgery she performed killed a patient.

According to the lawsuit, 37-year-old April Jenkins traveled from her Savannah home to Opulence Aesthetic Medicine in Kennesaw last February for a liposuction procedure to be performed by Dr. Nedra Dodds.

Jenkins died a short time after the surgery.

According to independent medical sources, what happened to April is a known complication from liposuction. Fat that was removed from Jenkins went into her blood vessels. The fat traveled into the heart. When pumped out, particles of fat got in the lungs. Blood backed up in the heart causing a cardio/respiratory death.

Trent Savage, a lawyer for Jenkins' family, told FOX 5's Morse Diggs by phone that he uncovered several alleged irregularities in the surgery.

Savage said that April's liver was pierced when the doctor used a probing instrument.

"It is a medical device that looks like a funnel, but it's sharp and it allows the doctor to put a camera in," Savage said.

Doctors at Kennestone Hospital, where Jenkins was taken by paramedics, couldn't save her.

Opulence employees gave statements.

"An employee was present during the medical procedure and said that during the procedure, a rag was inserted into the mouth of the patient and the drug Propofol was administered," Savage said.

The victim's sister recalled how April, who had plenty of several older siblings, acted as a leader.

"I miss her. I really do miss her. She was outstanding," said Audrey Jenkins.

Some patients FOX 5 talked to in the parking lot of the clinic said they felt their procedures were safe.

Amanda McBride, 25, said she is a patient of Dr. Dodds. She said she had a liposuction procedure the same month as Jenkins.

"I feel like they treated me better than a hospital would," McBride said.

FOX 5 has been unable to reach Dodds for comment.
