I-Team: Watch out for bogus tech support calls

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA -

There is a federal crackdown on bogus tech support calls. Fake service calls are really an attempt to steal your private computer information or make money off of you.

The I-Team's Dana Fowle is here to help you with the warning signs to watch for! You might have received one of these phone calls. The caller often claims to be working for Microsoft or your Internet service provider.

They con consumers into thinking that their computer is loaded with viruses – when often it's not. Then, they charge you hundreds of dollars to remotely fix it. The Federal Trade Commission has ordered two of these alleged bogus tech support companies to stop offering their fake service.

Back in September, the FTC announced that tens of thousands of consumers had been victims and the Feds are working to crack down on this.

Here's what you can do to avoid being a victim:

Don't ever give up a credit card number to a stranger who has called.

Never give control of your computer to a third party unless you've generated the call to a legitimate source.

If you've already made the mistake of inviting them into your computer, then change the passwords for your computer and for all of your financial accounts.
