Police: School gunman had 500 rounds of ammo

Posted: Updated:
DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. -

DeKalb County police say the suspect in Tuesday's shooting at a DeKalb County elementary school had nearly 500 rounds of ammunition on him when he was apprehended.

At a news conference on Wednesday, DeKalb County Police Chief Cedric Alexander said Michael Brandon Hill walked into the Ronald E. McNair Discovery Learning Academy Elementary School armed with an AK-47 and 498 rounds of ammunition.

The frightening incident forced the evacuation of the school on Tuesday afternoon.

Authorities released a jarring image of the 20-year-old terroristic suspect Wednesday.  Wearing a loose-fitting black T-shirt, Hill stood in front of a mirror posing with one hand holding an AK-47 – barrel pointed up -- and another on the cell phone he used to take the pic.

DeKalb County Police Det. Ray Davis, lead detective in the investigation, did not comment on what Hill's motivation might have been for his terroristic actions. He said no other weapons were found on the school grounds.

The AK-47, ammunition and bag have been recovered by law enforcement, Alexander said. ATF agents currently have custody of the weapon.

Chief Alexander credited the numerous law enforcement agencies that participated in securing McNair Academy, taking Hill into custody and aiding in returning the students to their parents waiting at the Walmart on Gresham Road, just north of I-20.

He specifically lauded Antoinette Tuff, the school worker who spoke directly with Hill when he walked armed into the school administration office.

"She put herself in front of him to separate those children, rest of the faculty, from getting hurt," he said.

Davis confirmed that officers did fire at Hill. The suspect fired his AK-47 in the McNair administration office, police said. Once he stepped outside of the office, officers did fire at him.

Hill said, "[He] did fire shots in the direction of officers."

"We have to make a reasonable assumption that he was there to do harm to somebody," the chief said.

As police surrounded the school, a surprisingly calm Tuff offered to walk Hill out of the building to surrender. He told him to put down his gun, take the bullets out of pocket and lay on the ground.

In the 911 call, Tuff is heard telling Hill, "It's going to be alright sweetie; I just want you to know that I love you though, OK, and I'm proud of you. That's a good thing that you're giving up and don't worry about it, we all go through something in life."

When authorities entered the office, Hill was on the ground.

Police said Hill not enter any of the classrooms during his time at the school. Police were able to take him into custody without incident.

There was some clarification of law enforcement's investigation into a car parked nearby the school. Earlier reports indicated that something may have detonated in the car. A DeKalb official said a K-9 keyed onto some potentially dangerous materials in the car. He said it was soon determined that Hill had no connection to the car and that the items in the car did not pose a threat.

Hill is charged with possession of a firearm during a crime, possession of a firearm at a public gathering, false imprisonment, aggravated assault, terroristic threats and acts and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. He waived his first DeKalb County court appearance Wednesday.

There were no reports of injuries.
