Residents vote to allow veteran to fly American flag

MCDONOUGH, Ga. -

A 91-year-old veteran can fly his American flag without fear of repercussions. Residents in a McDonough retirement community voted overwhelmingly on Monday to allow flags to be displayed from homes.

John Helton called FOX 5 last week after his homeowners association threatened to fine him up to $25 a day for flying the flag. The HOA claimed it violated rules.

Over the weekend, more than 100 people went into the McDonough neighborhood and flew their flags in support of Helton.

The Heltons maintained that a federal law prohibits HOAs from preventing the flag to be flown.

In response to the controversy, the HOA called for an emergency vote on Monday, in which homeowners approved a measure allowing flags to be flown.

"Staying in the military all my life, I know what a flag is and I know what it means, and I'm just glad we'll be able to fly our flag every day like we want to," Helton said.
