Mom upset about book on 10th grade reading list

COBB COUNTY, Ga. -

A local mother says a reading assignment given to her 10th grade student is inappropriate. LaDawn Leek says the book her daughter was told to read – Girl, Interrupted – features graphic descriptions of sex acts, violence, suicide and more.

"This book is a far cry from ‘Sweet Valley High,'" said Leek.

Leek said that she couldn't believe it when her 16-year-old daughter showed her passages from Susanna Kaysen's 1993 book.

The book is on the Rome High School class' summer reading list, which also includes books like Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter and World War Z.

As a sophomore, Quenticia Leek was assigned to read one of the books and write a report.

"We had to do a summary. It says pick three quotations, and if I would have wrote down three quotations in that book, I probably would have been in somebody's office," said Quenticia Leek.

The passages are too graphic for FOX 5 to show on TV, and LaDawn Leek believes they're too graphic for public school.

"They're not words in a dictionary -- words that you won't say to your grandma or your dad or anybody else. I couldn't even repeat them," said LaDawn Leek.

Rome Schools Superintendent Jeff Bearden said there is a process in place for parents about books on the list. They can file a complaint with the school's media resource committee and present their case to that committee, which has the power to remove the book

Bearden pointing out that the reading list has a warning which alerts parents that some of the books may contain mature material. The warning says parents should carefully review the list before their children choose a book.

LaDawn Leek thinks this book shouldn't be on the list period.

"I think the book should be pulled from the school," she said.

The Rome superintendent said that reading list is prepared by the school's English teachers.

Leek says she will go through the formal process to try and have the book removed.
