POLK COUNTY, Ga. -

Georgia state troopers say a driver left the scene of a one-vehicle crash early Sunday that killed one child and left another badly hurt.  Robert Wood, 42, was taken into custody on Sunday night less than a mile from the accident scene.

The accident happened on Tallapoosa Highway near Sewell Creek Road, south of Cedartown.  Investigators say 6-year-old Trent Brooks was killed, and his 5-year-old sister Gabriel was flown to T.C. Thompson Children's Hospital in Chattanooga for treatment.

Troopers say Wood crashed his 2009 Pontiac G6 into a ditch and rolled it over.  Witnesses say he got the children out and then ran from the scene.

Investigators believe Wood is the boyfriend of the children's mother.

Wood faces numerous charges, including leaving the scene of an accident.
