Storm cleanup underway in Gilmer County

Posted: Updated:

Firefighters in Gilmer County spent Friday checking on homeowners who spent the night inside their flooded homes.

Heavy rains early Thursday morning led to dozens of evacuations and even ripped some homes off their foundations.

From homes to pastures, resident have a lot of work ahead of them.

Kerry Sweat was one of many affected by the floodwaters.

"It was raining to beat the bark off of the trees," Sweat said. "I heard my alarm go off on my cell phone and I came outside, and I saw the river was rising."

He moved his truck out of the way of waters and then went to save his home.

"I stood at the doorway and piled the doorway full of towels and dumbbells and held the water off," Sweat said.

He spent Friday cleaning up his home and clearing out mud that was left behind.

Some roads were still blocked on Friday after floodwaters had covered them up.

Steve Dalrymple fixed fences on his cattle farm that were destroyed when water rose from a nearby creek.

The Georgia Emergency Management Agency advises Gilmer County residents who use well water to first boil their water or use bottled water until they can test the wells.
