Newnan woman, 78, found; critical after missing several days

Posted: Updated:

A 78-year-old Newnan woman suffering from dementia and missing for several days has been found. A massive search had been underway since Saturday for Eleanor Alexander.

More than 100 volunteers had scoured roads and combed through wooded areas to help bring Eleanor Alexander home safe and sound.

On Tuesday, volunteer Tracy Sargent and her black shepherd Cinco tracked Alexander's scent and then found her lying in the woods.

"As we continued searching, we went to the back of an area, and as we turned around the dog started responding again and went straight to her," Sargent said.

Coweta County Sheriff Mike Yeager says Alexander was lying just inside of a wood line, adjacent to an open field set several hundred yards away from the nearest road and within a mile of her home.

The sheriff said Alexander wasn't able to stand or speak, suffered exposure to poison ivy and numerous bug bites and appeared greatly weakened overall.

Paramedics worked fast to safely move Alexander from where she'd been found to a helicopter landed in the nearby field and waiting to airlift her to Atlanta Medical Center for treatment. As they administered oxygen and fluids to her, Alexander was said to become more lucid and managed to move one of her arms.

The paramedics wrapped Alexander from head to toe in what appeared to be a light-colored sheet or blanket, lifted her from the ground and carried her to the helicopter.

She was listed in critical but stable condition on Tuesday afternoon.
