Replacement picked for suspended Ga. commissioner

Posted: Updated:

BRUNSWICK, Ga. (AP) - A Glynn County property appraiser will be sworn in next month to take the place of a Brunswick city commissioner who was suspended from office after being charged with racketeering.

The Florida Times-Union reports 37-year-old Emmitt Nolan will be sworn in Aug. 7. Nolan says he plans to run for the commission seat, which will be on the ballot this fall.

Gov. Nathan Deal chose Nolan to fill the remainder of the term of James Brooks, who faces racketeering charges in Camden County from prosecutors who say he illegally used his elected position to influence others.

Brooks has been suspended with pay. That means Brunswick taxpayers are paying double for the commission seat, with Brooks and Nolan each receiving $1,200 a month.
