Local pastors reflect on George Zimmerman trial verdict

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA -

Americans are deeply divided over the not guilty verdict in the George Zimmerman trial, and people who disagree are mostly talking past each other.

FOX 5's Russ Spencer sat down with three pastors of a Gwinnett County church that has an advantage when it comes to racial and cultural understanding because its 11,000 members come from more than 100 different countries.

Emilio Schumann, Johnson Bowie and Olin Holly are among dozens of pastors at Victory World Church, which formed 23 years ago with diversity in mind.

"The reason that people come here is because we are intentional about our faith in Christ and I think we've learned that, with all the diversity, there is unity in Christ," said Holly.

When asked if justice was served with George Zimmerman's acquittal, Holly responded, "We realize that with open hands we accept what the jury has done and now we have to figure out how do we move forward from here."

Bowie said, "Obviously in this case, some people feel that justice has been done, some people feel like it hasn't been done and so the heart cries for that…from a church standpoint, how we try and navigate people through that is at some point you have to decide, am I going to be a victim or am I going to be a victor… You can't be both…and a lot of that comes by choosing to love in the midst of it."
