Fort Benning celebrating Independence Day early

Posted: Updated:

FORT BENNING, Ga. (AP) - Independence Day is coming early for soldiers and families stationed at Fort Benning.

The Army post outside Columbus scheduled its fireworks display at nightfall Saturday, after several hours of music and games starting at 3 p.m.

The Columbus Ledger-Enquirer reports other Fourth of July firework displays will be held in conjunction with actual holiday Thursday in downtown Columbus and in neighboring Phenix City, Ala.

The Army's National Infantry Museum, also located in Columbus, will hold its own celebration Thursday.

Fort Benning is home to the Army's infantry and armor schools as well as to an infantry brigade and a unit of elite Army Rangers.
