Tickets issued based on incorrect traffic signs

AUGUSTA, Ga. (AP) - Richmond County sheriff's officials say speeding tickets that have been issued to drivers based on incorrect speed limit signs are still valid.

Augusta traffic engineer Steve Cassell tells the Augusta Chronicle a contractor installed 45 mph speed limit signs on River Watch Parkway while crews worked on improving the Augusta Canal tow path.

The speed limit was supposed to be reduced from 55 mph during specific hours and under certain conditions, not permanently.

Officials say the contractor misunderstood the authorization and the incorrect signs have since been covered. Authorities say the signs were likely posted in February and were corrected in early June.

Some drivers say they plan to contest the $341 fine in court.
