Ga. choir's musical journey starts with mysterious letter

Posted: Updated:
DECATUR, Ga. -

Music can often be heard echoing throughout the Ray of Hope Christian Church sanctuary – even when the pews are empty.

It's the work of Music Minister Kabanya Vinson. She's about to lead her choir into its brightest spotlight, yet.

"We are going to Italy!"

For the next two weeks, these 37 singers will tour the country famously referred to as "The Boot." It's a musical journey that begins with a mysterious letter.

Kabanya said, "It said that Music Celebrations International, along with the mayors of Rome, Florence, Venice and Sienna, invited us to come and sing."

The concert tour will take them from St. Peter's Basilica to the canals of Venice. But, why and how this group was chosen – nobody will say.

Kabanya said, "The first contact I made at MCI, really nice guy. I said, ‘Chris, how did you find out about us?' He said, without being rude, ‘I'm not at liberty to tell that.'  He would never tell me."

Performing on this stage, in the church's beautiful sanctuary, is one thing.  But, performing on the world stage – amid some of the most famous landmarks in history -- requires a whole other attitude.  And, choir members say that might be the biggest challenge ahead."

Ray of Hope Rev. Dr. Cynthia Hale said, "It's a totally different mindset. It's a different posture when you sing."

"We had to prepare ourselves spiritually, mentally, emotionally, for what's going to happen."

Of course, one of these singers – Good Day Atlanta Anchor Karen Graham – happens to have some experience with pressure.

Karen  said, "Trust me -- when Kabanya raises her hands, ‘I'm singing! I'm not gonna travel across the world and not sing a note!'"

If this performance is any indication, then Italy is about to get the best of the U.S. And, for these men and woman – and old phrase – has never seemed so relevant. God does indeed work in mysterious ways.

If you’re a pet owner, you’ve probably been there. You lean down to say hello and, before you know it, your dog has planted a big wet one right on your mouth. But a UGA Vet says that “kiss” may come with a downside.
