Salvation Army giving away free fans to beat the heat

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA -

Sweltering summer heat can prove dangerous for senior citizens and young children. With the season right around the corner, The Salvation Army is giving out free fans to help people beat the heat.

It starts at noon Thursday and will be available while supplies last at The Salvation Army Ray and Joan Community Kroc Center at 967 Dewey St SW in Atlanta. Also at this location, a cooling station will be set up for people who need temporary relief from rising temperatures. It will go until 2 p.m. Thursday.

The Salvation Army is preparing for Atlanta to reach record-breaking high temps this summer.

"Our seniors and especially those that don't have shelter are at extreme risk," says Metro Area Commander Major Todd Hawks. He continued, " We are providing free box fans and opening our doors to those that want a place to come and enjoy a cold glass of water. Everybody, young, old, poor, and homeless deserves to be comfortable during these long  summer days.

He said, "Today you can find a free electric fan and a cold glass of water that will help relieve the summer heat at The Salvation Army."

To find out where fans will be distributed in your area, call 404-486-2900.
