The do's & dont's for this summer's DIY home projects

For many people, summer is the time to get home improvement projects done. But, that often means dipping into your wallet. Sometimes deeper… and deeper… and even deeper.

That is unless you can do it yourself. But first, the I-Team's Dana Fowle says there are projects worth paying for and others you might end up ‘paying for' in the end.

It's admirable to want to knock out some of those home improvement projects on your own. There is a sense of accomplishment and an opportunity to save some money.

These are great do-it-yourself, or DiY, projects:

Landscaping: The simple stuff like mowing, raking leaves, planting. The frugal savings site WiseBread -- http://www.wisebread.com/ -- suggests that paying someone else to do this is not always worth it.

The same thing applies to simple auto repairs, like changing out a battery yourself.

Patch a wall? Do it yourself.

If your plumbing problem is pretty simple, then find a YouTube instructional video and give it a try. You won't waste too much money if it doesn't work out.

But, here is where you should put on the brakes:

Don't try to remove a tree yourself. That's for the pros. The tree roots can be 30 feet wide. And, if the tree falls on your house, then that's an expensive mistake.

Also, it's best to leave roof repairs to the professionals, as well.

Heating and air jobs fall under the same heading. The WiseBread.com site says the bottom line with this level of jobs is that if you don't have special knowledge and experience, then you shouldn't do it.

The same advice goes for any major house renovations. Experts are licensed to do this sort of work. Remember, a home improvement mistake could be not only costly, but dangerous, too.
