UN ambassador nominee has Atlanta, WAGA ties

Posted: Updated:

President Barack Obama nominated Samantha Power to be the next United States ambassador to the United Nations on Wednesday.

Power has ties in metro Atlanta and – believe it or not – WAGA-TV!

Before heading off to Yale and Harvard Law, Power graduated from Lakeside High School in Atlanta, where she played basketball and ran cross country.

In the summer of 1989, she interned in the sports department here at Channel 5.

Power was an early supporter of President Obama, and resigned from his campaign in 2008 after telling a Scottish newspaper that Hillary Clinton is a monster, a remark for which she immediately apologized.

Power also won the Pulitzer Prize for non-fiction in 2003 for her book "A Problem from Hell": America and the Age of Genocide.
