A search is underway Wednesday for the man who assaulted a 10-year-old girl at an apartment complex in DeKalb County. Local police say this suspect may have struck before.
Just before 4:30 a.m. Monday, Keitha Cook says her 10-year-old daughter started screaming about a strange man. He'd broken into her family's home at the Marquis Ridge Apartments on Covington Highway in DeKalb County.
"She was screaming, she was shaking and she said, ‘There's someone in the house,'" Cook said.
The man allegedly performed a sexual act in front of the young girl.
"He told her, ‘If you scream, I'm going to shoot you.' And, she fought him and she screamed and she ran out of the house," Cook said.
The young girl's father tried, but was unable to catch the man in the apartment complex's parking lot. The girl's mother says she thinks the man entered their home through a front window.
DeKalb County detectives say the man behind this attack may have also assaulted two women on May 31.
"It was very quick. Everything happened so fast," alleged victim Ashley Murray said.
She said it was early that May 31 morning when a man entered her apartment through an open window. He performed the same sexual act in front of her and her roommate.
Murray said, "When I woke up, he was standing over our heads. He had his private areas out, so I felt like he was there for sexual reasons."
Cook says she's upset with the Marquis Ridge Apartments management for not alerting tenants to the previous reported attack.
"Everybody could have been on alert. My daughter wouldn't have been sleeping downstairs," Cook said.
Marquis Ridge management could not comment on the matter.
DeKalb County police do not have a clear description of the attacker. They say he has kept his face covered during both reported assaults.
Police say they will be holding a community-wide safety meeting at the Marquis Ridge complex.
