Snake sightings reported across north Georgia

Posted: Updated:

As the weather gets warmer, folks in north Georgia are reporting more and more snake sightings.

Amy Morrissey was sitting on the front porch of her home in Forsyth County a few weeks ago when she saw something dangling from the ceiling.

"I was sitting there and I come over and the snake was coming down these rocks probably to about here. I was just shocked that it was a snake, and I took a picture of it," Morrissey said.

Amy isn't alone. Dozens of FOX 5 Facebook fans posted pictures and video of the reptiles making themselves at home in the most peculiar places.

Stephen Morrissey, 14, says he's seen more menacing reptiles this year at his Suwanee neighborhood's fishing hole.

"There's been a lot more water snakes, especially, down here by the ponds. Like copperheads and water moccasins that have been sunbathing more than usual out here. They're definitely more visible," Morrissey said.

Richard Wallace of Urban Wildlife Control captured a picture of a copperhead in Sandy Springs. He said that this spring's cold snap has caused the snakes come out and get some sun.

Amy Morrissey just wants them all to stay and says it's a phobia as old as time itself.

"I think it does go back to the Garden of Eden. I was thinking about that the other day. I have no problem with spiders or anything else, really. For whatever reason, it's just the snakes," said Morrissey said.

Snake experts tell us that most snakes in metro Atlanta are harmless. Some non-venomous snakes are even protected because their populations are dwindling.

If you have unwanted snakes you should keep your grass cut short, get rid of wood and rock piles as well as bird feeders on your property.
