Police search for truck in connection with death of waitress

Misty Myrick was found dead in Oconee County. Misty Myrick was found dead in Oconee County.

Authorities are searching for a vehicle in connection with the death of a 38-year-old waitress whose body was found on the side of a road in Oconee County.

Police identified the woman as Misty Myrick, of Oglethorpe County. Authorities said that the woman left work at an Athens Waffle House around 1 p.m. on Wednesday. Her body was discovered around 2:30 p.m.  on Simonton Bridge Road.  She was still wearing her Waffle House uniform when she was found.

Starky Thomas stopped after seeing Myrick's body next to the road.

"I was holding hands with a dead woman for 20 minutes, hoping something would happen," Thomas said.

But paramedics were not able to save Myrick.

Investigators said that her death has been ruled a homicide.

A truck matching that description was seen in the area within minutes of her body being discovered, according to Chief Deputy Lee Weems of the Oconee County Sheriff's Office. Weems noted that the driver of the truck is not necessarily a suspect.

"They could have seen something that helps us. We know a truck matching that description, pulling a trailer, was in that area within minutes of the body being discovered," Weems said.

FOX 5's Chris Shaw reports that investigators are looking for a 1999 to 2002 Chevy GMC pickup truck, champagne in color with a trailer. The truck looks similar to this one:

Friends described Myrick as a soft-spoken woman, a mother who loved her family and was known to many in Athens because of her job. She was a waitress at the Waffle House for 20 years.

"I don't see why anyone would want to hurt her. Honestly. She wasn't that type of person," said Nikki Hudgens, a friend of Myrick.

Myrick's daughter, Tabitha Taylor, said her mother will be sorely missed.

"Nighttime is when it gets me the worst, because she used to sleep in our living room and make sure I was OK," said Taylor. "She always slept near me and it's going to sleep without her hugging me and telling me she loves me."

Taylor said that she'll try to follow advice that her mother told her almost daily: don't let anyone steal your smile.

"That's why I'm not really getting upset because I'm going to smile for her and make her proud," said Taylor.

Authorities said they have determined the cause of Myrick's death, but they said they are holding off on releasing that information.

Anyone with information on the death is asked to call the Oconee County Sheriff's Office at (706) 769-5665.
