AVONDALE ESTATES, Ga. -

Police say a cab driver was found shot to death and slumped over the steering wheel of his cab early Friday morning near a DeKalb County apartment complex.  The driver had been killed after picking up a passenger in downtown Atlanta.

Officers were called to the 200 block of Northern Avenue because of a report of shots being fired around 3 a.m.  They found the 42-year-old Checker Cab driver in his minivan just outside the Oak Creek Apartments.  The driver, identified as Dedrick Darcelin, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Check Cab officials said that Darcelin was had been dispatched to Bethel Towers Apartments to a passenger who had already been turned down by another taxi driver.

"We had another driver go to that location. He had asked for his money up front, and the customer had refused to give him his money up front," said Rick Hewatt, the president of Checker Cab.

Police are reviewing surveillance footage from a second taxi camera in hopes of getting a glimpse of the shooter.

Checker Cab is offering a $2,000 reward in the case.
