3 injured in deck collapse at Duluth home

DULUTH, Ga. -

Three people were sent to the hospital after a deck at a Duluth home collapsed on Monday.

Ten people fell to the ground with a jolt when the deck suddenly collapsed during the Memorial Day cookout. They all suffered scrapes and bruise; one woman was badly burned from hot oil when a deep fryer fell on her.

Clarissa Sewell said that she's lived at the house for about a year-and-a-half. She said that she held get-togethers with more people before and never had any problems. She said the only warning was a noise.

"We heard a popping noise," Sewell said.

After hearing that pop, Sewell said that the deck seemed to sway forward and then the whole thing crashed straight down.

A home inspector said that deck failures are typically at the bolt where it's attached.

"If the rim joist is not attached to the house properly then the band board for the deck is not going to do any good,' said CC Motes of Allview Home Inspectors.

Motes recommends that resident check the joists and support beams, but, in general, he said there are no warning signs, no squeaks or movements to look out for.  He encourages everyone who has a deck built before 2000 -- or who has bought a house and never had the deck looked at before -- to call an inspector.

Sewell is renting that home, so she didn't get a home inspection when she moved in.
