ATLANTA -

State Representative Tyrone Brooks appeared in federal court on Wednesday morning to answer to fraud charges.  Brooks pleaded not guilty before Magistrate Judge Alan Baverman.

On May 16, a 25-count federal indictment was handed down against Brooks, charging him with wire fraud, mail fraud and filing false tax returns.  Brooks is accused of soliciting more than $1 million in contributions to fight illiteracy in undeserved communities and other causes.

According to authorities, Brooks used some of the money for his own personal and family expenses.

The judge granted Brooks a $25,000 unsecured bond.  Brooks had to surrender his passport and he is not allowed to leave Georgia without permission of the court.

The case is expected to last about a month.

Brooks is being represented by former Georgia Governor Roy Barnes.  Barnes told reporters on Wednesday that he will represent Brooks for free, and that they would have no comment until a news conference on Thursday.
