City councilwoman Cleta Winslow is facing several criminal charges on Wednesday, including DUI.
Atlanta police say Winslow was arrested shortly after 11 p.m. on Tuesday. They say Winslow's gray Honda Accord was pulled over after police noticed the car allegedly commit numerous traffic violations near Oglethorpe and People Streets in southwest Atlanta.

Police say Winslow admitted to having a few drinks, but refused a field sobriety test and was booked into the jail. Winslow is facing a number of charges including DUI, driving on the wrong side of the road, and failure to stop at a stop sign.

According to police, Winslow gave permission to a friend to take her car and property away from the scene.

Court officials were aware that she made her bond early on Wednesday and was due to appear. Judge Christopher Ward was impatient when the councilwoman kept him waiting.

The councilwoman never appeared before Judge Ward. After about an hour delay, an attorney filed some paperwork to come back Wednesday afternoon and represent her.

"This was clearly out of the ordinary. An ordinary citizen ordered to court at 8:00 or 9:00, if they don't appear when their name is called on the calendar," said local government watchdog David Walker.

Walker wondered if a normal motorist would have been able to treat the court in the same manner.

Atlanta City Council President Ceasar Mitchell released a statement on Winslow's arrest on Wednesday afternoon. It states "I am aware that Councilwoman Cleta Winslow was arrested by Atlanta Police on suspicion of DUI on the evening of May 7.  This is a personal matter for Councilwoman Winslow, and the most prudent thing to do at this time is to allow the judicial process to take its proper course. My thoughts and prayers are with the Councilwoman and her family."

Mayor Kasim Reed told FOX 5 that he is going to let the incident play out in the legal system. He says he does not believe Winslow will be removed from the council, and plans on calling her today.

She was first elected to the Atlanta City Council in 1993.

FOX 5's Morse Diggs said that Winslow attended a City Council budget meeting on Wednesday. She told Diggs that she was going to continue to do her work because that's what she was elected to do.
