Making your run a safe one

Posted: Updated:
MCDONOUGH, Ga. -

Many of you might be getting ready for your early morning run, but are you ready for a safe run?

The group called Moms Run This Town in McDonough like to get off the beaten running path and into the thick of things, so that makes safety their number one priority.

They say runners have to watch out for cars, and you can't assume they're watching out for you.

"Cars are really not able to see you, whether it's dark and you're not easy to see. Or they're distracted. Really, you need to be protecting yourself as much as possible," said Moms Run This Town member Amber Schmidtke.

She says the number one way to do that is with reflective vests, and gear that you can get at any running store.

"We also have blinking lights that we suggest that you wear on your front and back, so that cars in front of you and behind you can see you at all times," said Schmidtke.

She also suggests that joggers should always run against the flow of traffic.

"You can see what's coming. Whereas if you're running with the flow of traffic, you have no idea what's behind you. So if you need to, you can jump into the ditch if necessary or you can move onto the shoulder. That's the big reason," Schmidtke said.

Schmidtke says carry mace with you for protection, although your biggest threat is probably from stray dogs. Though music keeps you motivated, she suggests keeping one headphone off.

"I run with one headphone off. And usually it's the side that the traffic is on or another runner so that I can have a conversation, be aware of their location, and just have a better sense of what's around me," said Schmidtke..

Moms Run This Town suggests always running in a group. There is safety in numbers. The group is raising money for the victims of the Boston bombings with the sale of shirts. To find out how you can help, click here!
