Gwinnett teen 'fostering a change' for kids in need

Posted: Updated:
LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. -

A Gwinnett County teenager is filling a need in foster care you probably didn't even know existed.  Her goal?  To provide foster kids with a simple change of clothes.

Wendy Blaze and her family have fostered children in need for the past two years.  She says a lot of times, kids come into foster care with just the clothes on their backs.

So Wendy's 15-year-old daughter, Emma, has found her own way to make a difference.  She started the program Fostering A Change, which provides other foster homes with a change of clothes in every size to get children through at least the first 24 hours of foster care.

Emma told FOX 5 she bought the first batch of bags with her Christmas money.  Each bag contains a shirt, bottoms, and socks for a boy or a girl.  She has collected over 800 bags so far, thanks to help from the Lawrenceville community and her church.  Still, she says she needs more than 1,000 more filled.

Emma's goal is to give each of the 60 foster families in Gwinnett County 36 bags of clothes-- and offer a warm welcome to foster children in an unfamiliar place.

"I know I'm helping a lot of people out by doing it so it just feels really good," she said.

Emma says the biggest need is large Ziplock bags, and clothes for older children from sizes 10-14.  If you'd like more information on how you can help Fostering A Change, call the Blaze family at (770) 978-1460.

If you’re a pet owner, you’ve probably been there. You lean down to say hello and, before you know it, your dog has planted a big wet one right on your mouth. But a UGA Vet says that “kiss” may come with a downside.
