A Cherokee County deputy shot and killed a suspect in the murder of his father and stepmother on Friday. Authorities say they were on the lookout for an armed murder suspect out of Blairsville in Union County.
A deputy spotted the suspect's car and officers from several departments helped track down the fugitive in the area of Swan Lane near Canton. Officials say they found the man, and warned him to drop his gun. The man refused, and a deputy shot and killed him.
The suspect's fiancée, who identified him as Anthony Lee Payne, says he was only protecting his family.
"I have a 14-year-old, 9-year-old, and a baby on the way by him. He was trying to protect them," said Consuela Earwood.
"Unfortunately, someone did lose their life. It was the suspect, and had he followed the advice or the instructions of the officers on the scene, possibly he would be alive today," said Lt. Jay Baker of the Cherokee County Sheriff's Office.
Authorities identified the victims in Union County as 59-year-old Charles Payne and 67-year-old Louise Payne. They were found dead on Thursday.
Family members said that Payne had spent most of his life in out and of prison on drug and theft charges. He was paroled in October, they said.
On Monday, Charlie Payne began calling his half-brother, Randy Hampton, and other family members asking for money, Hampton said.
The deputy has been placed on paid administrative leave while the Georgia Bureau of Investigation and Cherokee County authorities investigate the shooting.
