Police say an 11-year-old boy was struck and killed by a hit-and-run driver in Atlanta on Monday.
The incident took place on Boulder Park Drive near Brownlee Road around 5:30 p.m., according to Officer John Chafee of the Atlanta Police Department. The boy was struck by a red Eclipse as he attempted to cross the road, according to police.
The boy was pronounced dead at the scene, according to police.
Chafee said suspect Gatha Dyer, 43, surrendered to police in Clayton County shortly after the incident. Dyer is in Atlanta police custody, according to Chafee.
Police say Dyer faces charges of vehicular homicide, DUI, leaving the scene of an accident, driving with a suspended license, failure to yield, failure to maintain lane and failure to yield. He waived his first court appearance on Tuesday morning.
The boy lived in the area, according to police. Residents in the neighborhood said the fatal hit-and-run highlights their concerns over safety on this roadway.
"I'm concerned for these children, I'm outraged, too many children in this area for people to speed like they do," said Felicia Mason.
The Fulton County Medical Examiner's Office identified the victim as Patrick Williams, according to FOX 5's George Franco.
