Police conduct crime sweep in Buckhead

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA -

Police took the streets in Buckhead on Thursday in response to a recent spike in crime.

Atlanta police stopped traffic on Lenox Road asking people for their driver's license and checking their history to see if they may be a wanted suspect.

"A lot of times the individuals who commit those crimes in the Zone 2 area are driving into this area so we figure with a target enforcement of traffic, that may help us reduce those numbers," said Major Van Hobbs of the Atlanta Police Department.

The most recent incident happened off Northside Parkway when a homeowner pulled into a driveway and came face-to-face with thieves. She confronted them before she says one of them took her BMW.

City officials say there's been a rash of holdups, and now police are focusing on the high traffic areas.

"We've given out suspect information, vehicle information and all the units have that information, so if they spot any of those vehicles to conduct traffic stops on those vehicles, try to identify the suspect if we can, to see if we can get some of the incidents that interim reported in Zone 2 solved," Hobbs said.

Police said the sweep  will be conducted until 2 a.m.
