Ga. lawmakers hash out different gun law proposals

ATLANTA (AP) - Georgia lawmakers are debating which changes they want to make to the state's gun laws as the General Assembly's annual session heads toward a close.

A committee of House lawmakers debated Wednesday on the merits of differing legislative packages from two gun owners groups.

The House's Public Safety Committee did not vote on either piece of legislation.

One plan backed by the National Rifle Association has been approved by the Senate. It would prevent local governments from banning people living in public housing from having guns and recognize licenses to carry weapons issued by other states.

A separate bill supported by GeorgiaCarry.Org has been adopted by the House. It would allow people with a license to carry a gun to take firearms into churches, bars and parts of college campuses.
