NAACP, others to meet with Deal on DeKalb schools

Posted: Updated:

ATLANTA (AP) - Leader of the Georgia NAACP, black state lawmakers and other activists plan to meet with Gov. Nathan Deal to discuss the suspension of 6 members of the DeKalb County school board.

Edward DuBose, president of the Georgia NAACP, and members of the Legislative Black Caucus have a meeting scheduled with the governor Monday afternoon. They plan to hold a news conference after the meeting.

The groups say they're concerned about the governor having power to remove any elected official from office.

The governor suspended the six school board members over accusations of financial mismanagement and other allegations. DeKalb County is Georgia's third-largest school district and was placed on probation by an accreditation agency in December.

A panel appointed by Deal is considering applications of potential replacements to the school board.
