Toledo man may have been planning racially fueled attack

DETROIT (WJBK) -

He has killed before.  The feds say he had an arsenal of weapons and a list of possible targets in Detroit, which included the well known Wendell Anthony.

Anthony is a man of the cloth and a constant fighter for civil rights.  He is not often rattled or shaken, but this pastor and president of the city's NAACP was not prepared for paralyzing news like this coming from the FBI.

"An alleged white supremacist and Nazi, appeared to be one of his targets, and when you have an alleged list and you've defined and delimited certain patterns of behavior, that's cause for a pause," he said.  "This appears to be a one man army."

The feds informed Anthony that he was an alleged target of a Toledo man's racially fueled hate.

"When it's you it's right between the eyes and it's like whoa.  It's like wait a minute, and it makes you stop and think and you count your blessings," said Anthony.

47-year-old Richard Schmidt, a felon and a convicted killer, is back behind bars after the Cleveland branch of the FBI raided his home and business looking for counterfeit merchandise.  According to investigators, they found much more.  Their discovery was scary and included a cascade of firearms, body armor and bullets that law enforcement is led to believe Schmidt purchased through private sales and gun shows.

Why the cause for concern?  By law, he should not have any guns or pistol paraphernalia at all.

"When you see that somebody has 18 plus automatic weapons and 40,000 rounds of ammunition," said Anthony.

What also worried the clergyman is the personal information, almost a play-by-play, of his comings and goings collected by Schmidt, according to authorities.  But not just him, also his brethren Scott Kaufman, CEO of the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Detroit.

When we asked the reverend what would he say to Schmidt if they were ever one-on-one, he said, "a one-on-one conversation with Wendell Anthony [is] not going to make a difference.  Maybe he needs a one-on-one conversation with Jesus."

"I just think that for those of us who believe in what is right, for those of us regardless of race or background or ethnicity, if we believe in the cause that we are fighting for, we cannot let anything or anybody, any hate, stop what we are doing... because it really says that I must be doing something right if somebody is pissed off about it," he added.

"They saw, they got, they arrested, they arraigned and now they're getting ready to prosecute to the fullest extent of the law.  Right on," Anthony further said.

Anthony told me he is always thinking about "what if."  What if they did not catch this guy?  So he commends the FBI and said they are some of his "very" best friends right now.
