ROCHESTER HILLS, Mich. (WJBK) -
Recent changes to state law mean more Michigan families can afford the care they need for children with autism. Thursday, Oakland University hosted an autism summit as a way to engage healthcare providers and advocates.
OU is one of several schools focusing on graduating more therapists. Those therapists will one day work with autistic children and families struggling to find services.
"What Oakland felt we needed is to get the stakeholders together. Let's have a conference. Let's talk about it so that we can both affect policy and those policies that we can't do anything about in Lansing, what can we do? So hopefully there's partnerships that will take place and action items, and we have, of course, a whole center here called OUCARES that really addresses those quality of life issues," said Louis Gallien, dean of the School of Education and Human Services.
Oakland University first launched its Center for Autism Research in 2004. The program is now being expanded to the Meadows School in Rochester Hills.
