An Athens mother faces felony charges after police say she beat her teenage son with a belt so severely that he had to be taken to a hospital.
Athens-Clarke County police arrested Erin Guy late Wednesday at her home on Sherwood Court, where investigators say the 42-year-old used the buckle end of a belt to strike her 16-year-old's back.
An incident report does not describe why the teen was in trouble, only stating that there was some sort of tension between him and his stepfather. The 16-year-old told police when he tried to get away from his mother and avoid the belt whips, escape was blocked by his stepdad.
Once the whipping stopped, the police incident report reads Guy and her husband hugged the boy, said they loved him and "we just don't want you to be – (he forgot what word they used -- to society."
Other family members saw the teen's injuries and called police.
Guy faces felony battery and cruelty to children charges. She bonded out of jail on Thursday. She could not be reached for comment.
