New NRA App Stirs Up Controversy

Posted: Updated:

A free App endorsed by the National Rifle Association is coming under fire.

The game is called, "Practice Range" and was originally rated for ages 4 & up when it was first released.

Now, in the wake of the Newtown tragedy, the game is facing heavy criticism for it's young age rating.

Fox 29's Shawnette Wilson reports that, according to the Associated Press, the minimum age for the game was raised - to 12 & up.  It also received an added warning about intense and realistic violence.

The game allows players to shoot at different targets in a shooting range setting.  To some, the NRA is seen as hypocritical because they blame the video game industry for gun violence.

To others, such as a firearms instructor in Glassboro, he sees no problem with the game.

The App features tips about gun safety that show up each time you start a game.

The other debate is whether it is too soon after the Newtown tragedy for a game such as this to be released.

The issue is extremely sensitive and one that will no doubt continue to be discussed in the media and around the dinner table.
