FULTON COUNTY, Ga. -
Georgia Secretary of State Brian Kemp has subpoenaed Fulton County elections officials to appear in a State Election Board meeting. Kemp is seeking to get to the bottom of Fulton County's election problems.
The problems date back to last July's primaries and include people voting in the wrong district.
"I been frustrated ever since the primary, were dealing with problems," Kemp said.
Kemp's office received more than 100 complaints after the November general election.
"We felt like we were not receiving some of these documents in a timely manner to be able to complete our investigation," Kemp said.
Kemp says his bottom line is to protect each citizen's right to vote in fair, accessible, secure elections. His office is gathering information to present to the State Board of Elections Meeting on Jan. 31. Kemp said that criminal charges are a possibility.
"A lot of the election laws, certain violations in election law come with felonies. We've seen that before, we've done joint investigations where we have actually arrested people," Kemp said.
Kemp's investigators served subpoenas to interim Board of Elections Director Sharon Mitchell, as well as three high ranking election employees. Kemp says that he has also signed another subpoena for former Elections Director Sam Westmoreland.
Two Fulton County Board of Elections members have announced their resignation.
Sharon Mitchell sent FOX 5 a statement saying, in part, "Their inspectors have been welcome in our offices and have been on-site as recently as yesterday, Jan. 14. Our staff is focused on serving the citizens of Fulton County with professional and well-executed elections conducted in compliance with all applicable laws."
