Police say an Iowa man reported missing with his 5-year-old son fled a traffic stop in Gwinnett County on Friday.

Gwinnett police say Jeremiah Johnson, 33, was driving a silver 2003 VW Passat with Iowa tag 608ZBD when he was pulled over for allegedly running a red light at the intersection of Nelson Brogdon Boulevard and Buford Highway shortly after 10 a.m.

Police say they ran a check and found Johnson was reported missing out of Iowa, along with his 5-year-old son Johnathan, stemming from a custody dispute with the child's mother.

When the officer returned to the vehicle and asked Johnson to get out of the vehicle, they say Johnson refused and sped off with his son in the backseat.

Investigators say the officer followed Johnson for a short distance, and lost sight of the vehicle near Buford Dam Road as it entered Forsyth County.

Police say they are concerned for Johnson and his son, describing Johnson as possibly suicidal and homicidal. They say authorities found some of his personal belongings over the weekend in Jackson County but do not know why he abandoned them.

Johnson is 5'9" tall and weighs 230 pounds. He has blonde hair and green eyes. Police say his vehicle has a large screen TV attached to the back of the front seat, and there are handwritten writings on the exterior of the vehicle. One of the writings said "9/11 Veteran".

Gwinnett police say Johnson is facing several charges, including fleeing or eluding police, and reckless driving. Anyone with information is asked to call 911 or Gwinnett County Police at 770-515-5000.
