ATLANTA (AP) - Officials at Emory University have announced that an accomplished health researcher and educator has been named as university provost.
Emory officials say Claire Sterk, the university's senior vice provost for academic affairs, has been named to the position.
The position became vacant when Earl Lewis left in November to serve as president of the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. Lewis left the university just before students protested the planned elimination of several academic departments and cuts to others.
Officials say Sterk began serving as acting provost after Lewis' departure and has been an Emory faculty member since 1995. Sterk is also a former associate dean for research in the university's school of public health and holds faculty appointments in sociology, anthropology and women's, gender and sexuality studies.
