Some Forsyth County middle school students were honored on Thursday for doing the right after finding $1,400 on the side of the road.
The sixth and seventh grade students from Riverwatch Middle School were part of a recent clean-up along James Burgess Road. As they scooped up fast food wrappers and other litter, Lan Nguyen made a valuable find.
"We thought it was a $10 bill she had found. and it turned out to be a hundred," said Daniel White of the Cumming Kiwanis Club.
Other students also began finding bills.
"After that I was running around to see if there was anything else and I found $319," said Krystal Park.
In all, the students found nearly $1,400 along with a license and some credit cards.
After the initial excitement, the students said they began to think about the owner of the cash. They contacted the sheriff's department and handed the money over.
"They tracked down the owner and they finally found her and they returned the money and the credit cards and her driver's license," said Remington Youngblood.
The integrity shown by the middle school students has taught some adults a lesson.
"Essentially untraceable and it really didn't cross their mind, other than just a joking moment of 'Should we return it,'" said Tammy Wright of Keep Forsyth County Beautiful.
It is believed that the owner put a wallet on the top of her car and drove away.
