Group seeks to win contest to help veterans

Posted: Updated:
EAST POINT, Ga. -

A local group has entered a national contest in order to win money, and help veterans. The East Point Sons of the American Legion, Squadron 51, say they want to expand their volunteer work with veterans.

"We work with veterans groups at the VA clinic, at the VA hospital, veterans in the immediate area as far as needs…cutting their grass…just basic needs that they can't get from any place else," said member Tom Chebro.

The group also maintains a mobile wall that has the names of each Georgian who gave their life in Vietnam. To be able to provide the work takes money, and the money is usually raised by holding bingo games. Now, a possible grant from Home Depot would allow them to help even more veterans.

"It would be fantastic," said Chebro.

Squadron 51 is one of four organizations across the country competing in the Home Depot Foundation's Aprons in Action contest. The winner gets a $25,000 gift card to use for their public service projects. If they beat out the other three, Squadron 51 already has plans for their winnings. They plan on expanding their volunteer work at the VA hospital in Decatur

"Some of the equipment they have is outdated. It's broken, we want to update that," Chebro said.

They say they also want to spruce up the landscape of the VA clinic in East Point and lay the groundwork for a Frasier House for the families of wounded veterans. They say whatever they win, and whatever they do, it's just a small way to say thank you.

"We have to take care of veterans because they took care of us, and now it's our turn," said Chebro.

Squadron 51 will need you to win the contest. The winner is determined by the number of Facebook likes to their profile on Home Depot's Aprons in Action page, so click here!
