A group of people came together to help save a motorist trapped in an overturned car on an interstate ramp on Friday.
Mike Smith said that he saw the car flipped over on the curve of the I-75 north ramp off I-20 east.
"Just as I come to the bottom of the ramp, I noticed a vehicle turned upside down. And there's a lot of people stopping and getting out running to the car," Smith said.
The Douglas County man captured the commotion on his cell phone. He said the female driver of the flipped car was trapped inside.
"Bunch of people start grabbing the rear end of the car, which was uphill, and started lifting," Smith said. "They grab the vehicle -- maybe at this point 15 or so people -- and lift it up. One person dives down on the far side of the car and goes under, another goes in on the other side, undoes the seat belt and pulls the driver out."
Smith says when emergency crews arrived, care for the driver was already underway.
"They laid them out on the ground. One guy took his coat off, laid it over them. Another one came over with a large sheet of plastic and laid it over them, to keep them warm," said Smith.
Smith, a contractor who spends much of his work week on the road, says he wanted to showcase the kindness. He believes the quick-thinking actions saved a driver in distress.
"The thought that so many people would stop and do whatever they had to do -- that was the cool part," Smith said.
Georgia State Patrol said that the woman behind the wheel was a 19-year-old driving only with a learner's license. She was being treated for injuries at Grady Hospital.
