BRUNSWICK, Ga. (AP) - State biologists say they've spotted a humpback whale off Georgia's coast.
The Brunswick News reports (http://bit.ly/WnDjkp) that humpback whales are not commonly seen off the coast, though North Atlantic right whales are well-known winter visitors.
Biologists for the Georgia Department of Natural Resources spotted the humpback whale a few days ago, less than two miles from Little St. Simons Island.
Clay George, a DNR biologist specializing in marine mammals, said the young, endangered whale was swimming in less than 10 feet of water and was likely feeding on schools of small fish.
He said where the animals come from and why they end up off Georgia's coast is a mystery. He says there are always one or two humpbacks spotted in the region annually.
