A Kennesaw State University student mysteriously died over winter break, just days before he would have celebrated Christmas with his family. Freshman Jonathan Garner, 18, was a member of the KSU track team, and his death has left his coach and teammates shocked.
Authorities say Garner, who was known to students and teachers as "Little Johnny," died at home during his winter break from school. Coach Andy Eggerth says he was shocked in part because his athletes, including Garner, undergo thorough health screenings before they're even allowed to practice as part of the team.
Eggerth said he had great potential, calling him a scholarship-caliber Division I athlete who was a very talented sprinter.
Garner graduated from Roswell High School earlier this year. KSU teammate Sara McClimon also went to Roswell with Garner, and she said he was one of the most dedicated people on the team-- always wearing a smile on his face.
Shannon Christian, another of Garner's KSU teammates, said he had a great spirit, and there was never anything negative to say about him.
A funeral was held for Jonathan Garner in Mississippi on Thursday. Kennesaw State University is planning a memorial service in his honor on January 13.
