Lamar County fire crews freed a 2-year-old child who had been stuck in a well drain pipe on Thursday.
The incident happened off Martin Dairy Road in Milner. The boy, Carter Altman, was playing in his backyard when the ground gave way. Carter fell about 10 feet onto a ledge and was trapped for a half hour.
"I didn't know what to think. I didn't want anything to cave in around him because it was such a small hole. I was scared I was going to lose him," said Kelli Altman, the boy's mother.
Rescuers had to use high-powered flashlights to see Carter's head.
"He was crying a little bit -- I just think he was disoriented. He didn't have any idea what was going on," said the boy's great uncle, Chase Idol.
Emergency crews said Carter – who doesn't speak much yet – wouldn't lift his arms up until they lowered down his favorite toy with a rope.
"They finally got him to free up one hand, so they could get a rope around his hand. They made a noose, tightened it up, and then just lifted up by his hand," said Idol.
Carter's mother said she was elated when her son was pulled out.
"Oh, I was so excited, he was very dirty. But he got a bath and got some clean clothes on. I'm just glad he's OK," said Kelli Altman.
Family members say they've gotten a lot of rain lately, and they believe that made the dirt in the well unstable, to the point where the soil on top gave way.
Crews say their job will be to fill in the hole to make sure another incident doesn't occur.
Carter suffered a couple of scratches but is expected to be OK.
