Lassiter High Band heads for Tournament of Roses Parade

ATLANTA -

Members of the Lassiter High School Marching Trojan Band are on their way to California for another appearance in the Tournament of Roses Parade on New Year's Day.

The band members were hard to miss as they waited for their flight at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport on Thursday, decked out in maroon sweatshirts, the Tournament of Roses logo, and big smiles.

"It's just really rewarding to be able to have a goal like this, to have like a finished project that's so-- the granddaddy of them all is what they call the Rose Parade," said band member Maggie Howell.

This is the band's fourth trip to the Tournament of Roses Parade.

"About a million people will be there in the stands, then about a billion watching on TV around the world," said another band member, Andrew Mansell.

Mansell told FOX 5's Chris Shaw that the large number of people watching would not make him nervous, but that the event would be fun.  And fun is something these kids are sure to have lots of while they're on the west coast.  The 215-member band will visit Disneyland, Beverly Hills and the beach over the next few days before participating in the parade on New Year's Day.

"I'm just looking forward to it, and I can't wait sit on the parade route and watch them go by," said Karen Gonzalez, one of many parents who are also making the trip.

"I could not be prouder. They are the best band in the land. And as a parent, as a booster, as a co-president, words don't even describe it," said band booster Nancy Hollin.

For the band members who have worked hard all year, it's a great honor to make the trip.  Mansell says the band has been practicing for the parade by marching around the school's track-- for distances of up to 5.5 miles at a time.

"After practicing all those hours and all those nights, it's really great to finally be able to go and perform what we've been practicing," said band member Jason Grooms.

The Marching Trojan Band will return to Atlanta on January 2.
