The mayor of Decatur is stepping down to pursue other opportunities. Bill Floyd submitted his letter of resignation on Thursday. It will be effective January 7.
Floyd says he's been offered another professional opportunity that will require a significant amount of time and attention.
He has served as mayor of Decatur since 1999.
The Decatur City Commission is expected to vote on a replacement January 7 and a special election will be held to fill Mayor Floyd's seat as North District City Commissioner.
