DOT: Mayor Maynard Jackson's widow should keep disadvantaged minority certification

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA -

The widow of former Mayor Maynard Jackson scored a major victory on Thursday.  The state Department of Transportation says Valerie Jackson and others should be considered disadvantaged minorities.

That means their politically connected companies are more likely to keep lucrative contracts to do business at the Atlanta airport.

Earlier this year, the FAA ordered the state DOT to decertify the four companies, including Ms. Jackson's, saying they didn't qualify as disadvantaged.

But after hearings were held and evidence heard, the DOT said on Thursday that they do qualify.
