Former MARTA head takes job in Boston

BOSTON -

The MBTA has a new leader at the helm.

Beverly Scott officially takes over as general manager of the Boston-area transit system on Monday. She comes to Boston after five years at the helm of Atlanta's transit system.

Scott plans to greet customers at two T stations and unveil new countdown clocks that will let customers know how long before the next train arrives.

The new GM will face some major challenges in the coming months.

The MBTA's projected deficit for the next fiscal year starting July 1 is $130 million.

The T raised fares by an average 23% in April to address a deficit in the current year.

Gov. Deval Patrick and lawmakers are expected to discuss proposals for overhauling transportation finance in the next legislative session.
