Family collects teddy bears for sick kids

Posted: Updated:

Going to the hospital can be frightening no matter what your age. It can be especially traumatic for a child, and one local family is helping some of the youngest patients feel more at ease.

When Laura Adams lost her grandmother, Ruth, in October, she decided she wanted to do something special to mark this first Christmas without her. She and her family started collecting teddy bears and other stuffed animals from friends, neighbors and schools.

"My sons and husband and family decided this might be something we could do that would be special in her name.," said Adams.

The Adams family handed over more than 150 stuffed toys of all shapes and sizes to some very grateful paramedics at Rural Metro Ambulance on Friday. The first responders like having the animals on hand when they have to take scared and injured children to the hospital.

"If they have a nice stuffed animal they can hold on to on the way to the hospital, that goes a long way in relieving that fear in that child of whatever that incident is that's causing they to be transported to the hospital," said Ron Craig of Rural Metro Ambulance.

Adams said they wanted to give back to their community, and show their children the true meaning of Christmas.

A spokesman for Rural Metro Ambulance says this is the third donation of stuffed animals they've received in recent weeks. They say they always welcome donations of stuffed animals as long as they are clean and in good condition.
