Police are investigating after the body of a newborn was found in a shoebox in the woods in Cobb County. The discovery was made Wednesday night behind the Mableton Sierra Forest apartment complex on Mableton Parkway.
Police said that the body was taken away by the medical examiner office.
A woman who said that she was a family friend said that the mother is 13 and the father is 14 years old. That woman, who asked not to be identified, said that the two teens attend the same middle school as her children, and that students at the school were aware of the pregnancy.
"I think she knew, but she was afraid to tell her parents," said the woman.
An autopsy will determine the cause of death of the newborn.
Georgia is a "safe haven" state, which by law allows a mother to leave a newborn within seven days of birth at a fire station, a hospital, a clinic or a school nurse and not face any charges.
