SWAT units arrested a man accused of robbing a store and exchanging gunfire with officers on Friday. Three nearby schools were placed on lockdown as police corned the man in a neighborhood close to the store. Another man is still being sought in the connection with the robbery.
This started at the Family Dollar store near the intersection of Covington Highway and Panola Road just before 10 a.m. Friday. Witnesses tell FOX 5 News that a man approached the register and demanded money.
An employee said that the same store had also been robbed on Thursday.
On Friday, a woman saw the masked man entered the store and called 911.
A responding DeKalb police officer pulled up to the back of the store and saw the robber leaving from the back door. The officer and the suspect exchanged gunfire, according to police and witnesses.
A spokesperson for the DeKalb County Police Departments tells FOX 5 News that were no reports of injuries.
Authorities said they saw the man break into a home on Panola Road.
The SWAT unit arrived just before noon surrounded the house where the suspect was hiding. The man surrendered after a several hour standoff.
Video from SKYFOX 5 show a heavy police presence in the area. Officers shut down a portion of Panola Road during the manhunt.
School officials said they put three DeKalb County schools on lockdown during the search. Redan Middle, Panola Way Elementary, and Marbut Theme schools were secured as a precaution.
Police said they were still seeking another man in connection with the robbery.
